The American State Standards Initiative have released common core standards for learners in American schools, available at http://www.corestandards.org/. They seem to be skills based. My question is, “Do we need any prescribed curriculum at all?”
When there is so much to learn it is good to decide where to start. Alternatively, perhaps learners learn want they want to learn – learning that is contingent. Perhaps we need educators who can pass on their skills and experiences as needs arise. However I don’t suppose this is very helpful for mass production.
Meanwhile Mozilla are suggesting an Open Badge Framework (link thanks to Seb Schmoller). This approach connects small chunks of demonstrated learning into collections which are portable for life.
